What is the difference between a synthesizer and a MIDI controller?

A synthesizer has circuitry inside it to generate sounds. A MIDI controller does not; it outputs midi information only, and must be connected to a sound-generating device in order for you to hear anything. In many cases this is done with a simple USB connection to a computer or mobile device running virtual instrument software. It can also connect to a synthesizer or other hardware device designed to accept midi input and produce sound - this is usually done with the older 5-pin DIN cable connection that goes back to the early 1980s when MIDI was introduced.

Using a controller connected to a computer or mobile device running virtual instrument software is how I make music. I like the flexibility to choose software instruments that feel the best for me to play, plus I like being able to configure my setup to work exactly as I want. This is not for everyone though - imo you need some computer smarts and be technically inclined to get the best out of this approach. There's something to be said for a synthesizer that you only have to turn on to start making music!

Recommending any particular models of synths or controllers is beyond the scope of one answer, I'm afraid. Keyboard controllers and synths come in many flavors and price points. Do you need or prefer a full 88-key weighted keyboard like an acoustic piano, or will 73, 61, 49, or 25 keys with a lightweight "synth" action do? There's tremendous variety. The style of music you want to do will also be a factor. Controllers tend to cost a little less than full synths and concentrate on providing buttons, sliders, potentiometers and pads that you assign to control whatever virtual or hardware instrument you're connecting to; to get the most value from these, a basic knowledge of MIDI and its various controller codes is helpful. Some synthesisers have controller-like functionality and will let you send MIDI from its buttons, sliders, etc. to other devices, so there's some overlap there.
