"Dream Eji" is a profoundly moving Mongolian song that has touched millions across China. Originally composed by Tegshjargal and written by Lkhagvasuren from Mongolia, it was first popularized by Mongolian singer Javhlan before becoming widely known in China through two remarkable young voices.
The song gained initial recognition around 2007-2008 when Bater Dawaji, a self-taught singer from the Wuhulunbeier Children's Choir, performed it with stunning emotional depth. However, it was 12-year-old Uudamwho truly catapulted the song to national fame during his 2011 performance on "China's Got Talent." An orphan from Inner Mongolia who lost both parents, Uudam delivered a heart-wrenching rendition dedicated to his late mother, reducing judges and audiences to tears.
"Ee ji" means mother in Mongolian, and the lyrics express a child's longing for their distant mother, using imagery of grasslands, clouds, and prayers. The melody blends traditional Mongolian musical elements with modern arrangements, creating an ethereal, haunting atmosphere. The song has since been covered by numerous artists including Wulan Tuya and Danzeng Nima, becoming a cross-cultural anthem celebrating maternal love and filial devotion.
